A very fast large format printer 42 inches wide. Four colour thermal inkjet using a CMYK process. The 4000 family gets its speed by using double-swath, two printheads for each colour. Printheads are fast designs with 524 nozzles each. High capacity cartridges and long-life replaceable printheads give low operating costs. The printer has remote management capabilities using HP embedded Web Server making it easy to control jobs, monitor ink and media consumption.
Primarily aimed at engineering and cartographic uses. Has Pantone calibration and offset emulation supporting use in pre-press and publishing. Screen to print matching with sRGB and Adobe RGB. Closed Loop Colour (CLC)

The DesignJet 4500 is the successor product and a similar printer. The 4500 can be matched with a 42 inch scanner providing multi-function printer abilities.
The matching DesignJet 4500 scanner is also used with the DesignJet 800 series copier.

Graphical LCD display with animation on the printer. Remote printer management via embedded web server and HP Web Jetadmin fleet support tool. HP DesignJet 4000 / 4500 Series.
Print Speed:
1.55 sq metres per minute – or about 93 square metres per hour. A1 side in 25 seconds. Up to 100 A1 sized prints per hour. Photo quality: 6.9 m2/per hour

Up to 2400×1200 optimized dpi from 1200×1200 input. PhotoREt III
Paper Handling:
Manual single sheet and roll feed. Roll feed up to 5.3 inches diameter (135mm) and up to 300 feet (90m) long. Has an adapter kit for three two extra-long media rolls with fast automatic roll switching. Automatic cutter.
Processor:
Embedded processor can manage simultaneous printing and processing.
Memory:
256MB base memory expandable to 512MB. A 40GB hard disk is optional on the 4000.
Interface:
Fast Ethernet 10/100Mbps supporting TCP/IP only. Other protocol suites can be supported by a Jetdirect 620n, optionally a JD630n. FireWire IEEE-1394A. 1 x EIO slot.
Print Languages:
DesignJet 4000: – HP-GL/2, HP-RTL, TIFF, JPEG, CALS-G4. The “PS” models have Adobe PostScript Level 3 and PDF 1.5 in addition to the above.
Consumables:
Inks are HP 90 series C5058A, C5059A, C5063A, etc. Pigment black, Dye based colours. C, M and Y cartridges are 225ml and 400ml. Black 400ml.
